Animating Justice?

Abstract: Computer Generated Animation (CGA) has been used in a number of high profile cases, including the Ipswich murderer Steve Wright and in the trial of Peter Tobin for the murders of Angelika Kluk and Vicki Hamilton. However, despite this increasing use, there has been little empirical examination of these techniques and there is concern from some that they can have potentially misleading effects on jurors. The article summarises the main advantages and disadvantages of using CGA in court, the current guidelines in the UK and internationally, and offers some suggestions for future research and policy.
